Water for Life
Supporting the communities in West Pokot to access to water
Water is the essence of life, critical not only for human survival but also for the health and balance of entire ecosystems. Despite water covering about 71% of the Earth’s surface, only 3% is freshwater, and much of that is inaccessible. For arid regions like northern Kenya and West Pokot County, the scarcity of clean, accessible water is a dire challenge. Communities in these areas face severe consequences, including deaths, diseases, and widespread hardships directly linked to the lack of water.
For the past four years, the Safe Space initiative has been working tirelessly to address these water-related challenges in West Pokot. We are committed to providing sustainable solutions that ensure access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Through our efforts, we have drilled wells, constructed water pans, and equipped communities with the knowledge and skills to adopt best hygiene practices. These programs have not only improved access to safe water but also strengthened the resilience of these communities, reducing waterborne diseases and enabling healthier, more productive lives…Read More
Women in Micro-Entrepreneurship
Working with women in West Pokot to build their enterprises
In West Pokot, women face numerous challenges, from limited economic opportunities to systemic barriers that hinder their progress. To address these issues and unlock their potential, we actively support women in starting and managing micro-enterprises. Our approach involves a rigorous process designed to ensure success and sustainability. It begins with targeted outreach to identify women with the drive and vision to transform their lives and communities. We then provide comprehensive training to equip them with the skills needed to run successful businesses, followed by seed capital to help them launch their ventures. Beyond the initial setup, we offer ongoing mentorship, monitoring, and evaluation to guide them through challenges and ensure their enterprises thrive.
This holistic approach not only enhances women’s economic resilience but also fosters confidence, leadership, and independence. Empowering women entrepreneurs contributes to household stability, improves children’s welfare, and drives community development, creating a ripple effect of positive change. By investing in women-led businesses, we are building a foundation for a stronger, more equitable future in West Pokot.
Education For Life
In West Pokot, girls face significant barriers to education, with only 16-18% accessing schooling. Early marriages, cultural practices, and economic hardships force many girls to drop out, leaving their potential unrealized and perpetuating cycles of poverty. To address this, we are committed to empowering girls through education by providing sponsorship programs that cover school fees, uniforms, learning materials, and other essentials. These efforts alleviate the financial burden on families and ensure that girls can focus on their studies without interruption.
Education is a powerful tool for change, and investing in girls’ education has transformative effects. Educated girls are more likely to delay marriage, earn higher incomes, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Our initiative also works to raise awareness among parents and community leaders about the importance of educating girls, challenging societal norms that hinder their progress. By supporting girls in West Pokot, we are not only transforming individual lives but also creating a ripple effect that benefits families, communities, and future generations. Together, we can break down barriers and build a brighter future for every girl.
Health For Life
Women and Family Health; Bringing Health and Wellness Closer to Communities in West Pokot
Access to healthcare remains a significant challenge for the people of West Pokot, with many community members forced to walk 10 to 15 kilometers—often taking over two hours—to reach the nearest health facility. To address this pressing issue, we have established Health and Wellness Camps that bring essential healthcare services closer to the community. These camps provide a range of services, including medical consultations, screenings, immunizations, maternal and child health care, and wellness education. By setting up these camps within reach of the community, we aim to reduce the distance and time barriers, ensuring that more people can access timely and quality healthcare.
In addition to addressing immediate health needs, these camps also promote preventive care by educating community members about hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention. They serve as a vital platform for raising awareness and building healthier lifestyles, particularly in remote areas where healthcare resources are scarce. Our Health and Wellness Camps are more than just temporary solutions—they are a step toward creating healthier, more resilient communities in West Pokot.
