COVID-19 Response: Humanitarian Feeding Program 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges globally, and West Pokot was no exception. With the closure of open markets and disruptions in supply routes to this dry region, many families were left stranded without access to basic necessities. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Safe Space for Women and Girls mobilized friends and donors to provide emergency support to vulnerable households.
Through our Humanitarian Feeding Program, we have successfully reached over 300 families with essential food supplies, ensuring that no one goes hungry during this crisis. Our response focused on the most affected households, including widows, single mothers, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, who faced heightened vulnerabilities due to the pandemic.
In addition to food distribution, we have conducted awareness campaigns on COVID-19 prevention measures, emphasizing the importance of hygiene, mask-wearing, and social distancing. Handwashing stations have been set up in key locations to promote public health and curb the spread of the virus. To further support families, we have distributed hygiene kits, including soap, sanitizers, and masks, ensuring that vulnerable populations have the necessary tools to protect themselves.
As part of our long-term strategy, we are working on sustainable solutions to food insecurity in West Pokot. This includes supporting families with agricultural inputs, training on climate-smart farming techniques, and establishing community food banks to build resilience against future crises. Additionally, we are strengthening local supply chains and supporting small-scale farmers to ensure a steady food supply even in times of crisis.
