West Pokot County
West Pokot...at a glance
In the remote and underserved communities of West Pokot County, where poverty, harmful social norms, and limited access to essential services continue to undermine the rights and potential of women and girls, our Safe Space for Women and Girls serves as a center of protection, empowerment, and transformation. Our programming is intentionally integrated and adaptive, grounded in the understanding that health outcomes, economic resilience, and protection are mutually reinforcing. We provide a holistic model that combines gender-based violence prevention and response, economic empowerment, and community health outreach, ensuring that immediate needs are addressed while long-term pathways to stability are strengthened.
For example, our humanitarian food distribution efforts are linked to nutrition education and maternal health follow-ups, while our girls’ empowerment initiatives integrate life skills development with reintegration into education and sustainable economic pathways. Through confidential referral systems, psychosocial support, entrepreneurship training, and strong partnerships with local health and justice actors, we create an environment where women and girls are not only safe, but equipped to rebuild their lives with dignity and agency.
Our proximity to communities, coupled with a strong track record of delivery and collaboration, enables us to deploy resources efficiently, respond rapidly to emerging needs, and generate sustainable outcomes that extend well beyond project cycles.
Programs in West Pokot
School Feeding Programs
Kenya’s school-age children and adolescents, who make up 36% of the population, face a significant burden of malnutrition, including undernutrition and rising rates of food poisoning especially in dry areas. The World Health Organization advocates for sustainable food systems that prioritize healthy diets to combat these challenges, especially in developing nations like Kenya. National policies such as the Constitution of Kenya 2010, Vision 2030, and the Food and Nutrition Security Policy 2012 highlight the importance of nutrition for all citizens. However, malnutrition continues to impact growth, cognitive development, school performance, and long-term health outcomes for children and adolescents. With students spending 75% of the year in school and consuming more than half of their daily meals there, schools are a vital platform for addressing malnutrition and ensuring the constitutional right to adequate food and nutrition. To tackle this, Safe Space for Women and Girls Initiative collaborates with primary schools and early childhood development centers in West Pokot County, a region that faces frequent droughts and food insecurity. Over the past five years, our school feeding program has improved attendance, academic performance, and attitudes toward education. We invite your support to continue providing nutritious meals for pre-primary and primary school children, fostering their health, growth, and educational success.
Women in Agriculture Support
To boost productivity and transition from outdated farming practices, we actively support women in agriculture by equipping them with technology, irrigation systems, water access through drilling, and targeted training programs. These initiatives empower women to enhance their farming capacity, increase yields, and improve their incomes, fostering greater economic independence and resilience.
Investing in women in agriculture is not just about supporting individuals—it is about driving systemic change. Research from the FAO highlights that if women had the same access to productive resources as men, they could increase farm yields by 20-30%, reducing global hunger by an estimated 12-17%. This transformative potential underscore the profound impact of gender equality in agriculture, where empowering women translates into progress for entire communities.
When women farmers thrive, they become incredible catalysts for social and economic change. They can better provide for their families, contribute to community food security, and elevate their social standing, breaking cycles of poverty and inequality. Supporting women in agriculture is not just an investment in food security—it is an investment in a more equitable and sustainable future.
Join us in championing women in agriculture. Together, we can build resilience, foster progress, and create a world where equality fuels prosperity for all.
Humanitarian Food Distribution
The Safe Space for Women and Girls Initiative delivers life-saving relief in emergencies and uses food assistance to foster peace, stability, and prosperity for communities recovering from conflict, disasters, and natural calamities like drought. While food aid remains a reliable model, we advocate for food assistance, which takes a more holistic approach by addressing the long-term nutritional needs of the people of West Pokot and implementing diverse strategies to meet those needs.
Our commitment goes beyond addressing immediate food requirements. We collaborate with partners and donors to design lasting solutions, such as drilling water sources, providing training, and implementing anticipatory actions to enhance food security. This shift recognizes that hunger does not occur in isolation—it is deeply intertwined with broader social and economic factors.
To make a lasting impact, we focus on the most vulnerable members of society, dedicating time, resources, and expertise to create tailored, multi-year support programs aimed at lifting entire communities out of poverty. Food is life. Join us in building a brighter, hunger-free future for all.
